OK, firstly some funny things that
have happened at Airlinks over the years...
Fiery started seeing the girl who worked in the pro
shop. She fell madly in love with him and as usual Fiery
lost interest within about 2 weeks.
For about the next 6 months we had to smuggle him into
the club. He was a popular guy there and the staff would
regularly ask "Where's Joe then" (only we
call him Fiery because of the record number of putters
he has killed) and we would have to come up with story
after story of how he had given up the game and gone
to live in New Zealand! We'd pay his green fees and
wait for him to meet us on the second.
I remember he hit a wonderful 2 iron second shot at
the 18th one day into the heart of the green leaving
himself a putt for eagle, only to ask me to pick his
ball up for him as the old green was in full view of
the shop...
Then there was the time Fishlock turned up there on
a nasty winters day in an all in one rain suit. Unbelievably
it was brilliant white!
He kept it pretty clean until the 15th when his tee
shot found the edge of the lake at the short par 3.
Even more unbelievably he elected to play the shot from
the water!
Need I say more. When he walked up on to the green he
was covered!!!
MIGC's association with Airlinks goes right back. We
played our 2nd ever competition on the course back in
the summer of 1992 and most recently played a very successful
Tour Championship there at the end of 1999.
Most memorable occasion would be the 1998 Vardon Trophy
match, the only time so far we have managed to win the
trophy. Not only a great day at Airlinks, but a great
day (weekend) in the life of the club.
The course, was co-built by the noted commentator and
scribe, Peter Aliss. No less! It's possibly not the
first item of his portfolio that he produces to lure
potential employers, especially in it's original condition.
But ever since the David Lloyd organisation have taken
over and many of the holes have been re-developed, it's
becoming a quality arena in which to play.
Of course it will never be a Wentworth or a Sunningdale,
but then for the average 18 handicapper those courses
are fine for the occasional day out but they would wear
you down if you played then week in week out.
The beauty of a course like Airlinks is that we average
players can feel the thrill of putting for birdies and
reaching par five's in 2.
One great thing about the place has always been its
people. In all the time we have been using the course,
and we can be quite large group to fit in at peak time
on a Saturday afternoon, we have always been most welcome.
Everyone's friendly and helpful.
It is possible to feel a little intimidated when you
visit some clubs, "Oh my God I forgot to wipe my
feet" syndrome. As a group I sometimes get the
feeling that society's are deemed more an unavoidable
nuscience, than welcome visitors.
Another plus point is that in all the time we have been
visiting the club, there has never been a temporary
green, and that makes such a difference to your round.
In fact I can't think of another course in the area
that doesn't use temporary's.
Airlinks comes highly recommended from MIGC. You won't
be writing home about the views as another 747 comes
in over your head, but you should shoot under your handicap
and maybe even make a birdie or two, which always feels
good throughout the next week at work.
There's a smart new driving range, marvellous food in
the bar, just when you need it and a good "peaceful
easy feeling" about the place.
Live long and prosper Airlinks.
