5753 yards - Par 68

My most vivid memory of playing golf at Uxbridge comes from the first time I played the course. It was the first round of the 1998 TPC. I was on the back of the green of the par five 8th hole in three, looking at about a 20ft birdie putt. The competition was in it's early stages, but I was leading. I had won this event back to back in '95 and '96, had to pull out in '97, so I still felt like a defending champion, and there I was back in the lead.

I looked at the putt, which seemed pretty flat. I noticed that behind the pin there was a slight up slope, so I figured I could be positive with the putt without worrying about knocking it too far past.

I hit the putt just as I wanted to, it rolled towards the hole. It went straight past the hole, off the green, down the slope and into some deep rough some 20 yards away! I ended up making nine and I never threatened the lead again!

This little adventure of mine sums up the main obstacle you need to overcome in order to make a good score at Uxbridge. Most of the fairways are wide with accuracy from the tee being a premium rather than essential. You can get back in play relatively easily following most errant drives, although it will catch up with you if you consistently miss the fairways.

The Third Green

The main teeth the course has are it's greens. They don't look like the scary slopey monsters we sometimes have to face, at least you know where you stand with them, these greens lull you into a false sense of "straight putt or slight break" security, only for you to end up pulling your hair out after consistently three putting from 15ft.

You end up getting confused and scared of the fast surfaces, until you are putting so defensively that you walk off the 18th green happy to have got down in only three putts!

Uxbridge is a joy to play, especially for 12-20 handicappers, who will find it a challenge but not daunting. Most of the par 4s are under 400 yards and reachable with two good shots. Three of the five par 3 holes are a short to medium iron and the only downer is that there's only one par 5, the 8th, my hole...
